Thank You for your support to help feed those in need in the Kamloops area.
The Kamloops Food Bank and Outreach Society has provided food and services for disadvantaged children and families since incorporating in 1988.
Started by area churches and volunteers, the Food Bank's mandate is to feed the hungry regardless of ethnicity, race, religion or gender. Food is provided by way of monthly hampers to the hungry and needy. Our client intake system clearly identifies financial and clothing needs through an interview process.
In 2007, we served 23,000 babies, children, families, seniors and adults. When we saw that more than 400 children under 6 years of age, and pregnant/nursing women needed extra food support for healthy development, we asked people of Kamloops to help us give weekly baby food hampers. Since then we have also added the terminally ill to our weekly food hamper programs, in the belief that supporting the dying through food is what our donors want us to do.
Our mission is to take the helped to helper, so that we invite all who need food to volunteer in the Food Action Centre, to be a part of the solution of feeding the hungry. Over 36,000 volunteer hours were contributed by our wonderful women, men, seniors, different abilitied folks, and children in 2007. Our volunteers are a respected and vital part of our food services to the hungry. They are the heart and soul of our Kamloops Foodbank/Action Centre. Our success is due to the hard work of our Board members, and talented staff and volunteers who believe that everyone can contribute something to our organization.
The warmth and spirit of Kamloops Foodbank/Action Centre is an experience in itself. Foodshare, our new community partnership perishable food recovery project, delivered over 779,000 pounds of good food to all charities feeding the hungry from January 2007 to December 2007. Special thanks to Save-On Foods and Coopers Food Stores for the best before dated vegetables, fruits, meats and milk products they provide to the hungry of our city. Imagine the health benefits to the babies and children who need good nutritious foods to develop normally! Foodshare exists solely through generous community donors - of food and money.
There is no government funding for this program, so that all costs are fundraised through the Kamloops Foodbank/Action Centre, to provide food for all charitable agencies feeding the hungry in Kamloops. The Tournament of Food each March, put on by community seniors at Desert Gardens is our main Foodshare event. Our City of Kamloops is a wonderful example of how local people and charities support each other. We are proud to be a part of such a giving community. Hats off for helping us develop a program which saves the environment, feeds hungry children, and is efficient for stores. Every charity needing food receives a share based on numbers fed. Thank you Kamloops! The Kamloops Food Bank also operates the following programs:
The Kamloops Food Bank is supported through donations directly from the community. Donations may be in cash or in kind (goods). All donations over $10 are eligible for a tax receipt, including food and other in-kind donations.
