To provide and support programs and services that feed the hungry , promote long term food security and improve the social well- being of people in our community
The Food Bank was started in 1981 by Mr. Hank Woodland in the basement of the United Church. We moved to several different locations until we incorporated in 1988 and became the Kamloops Food Bank & Outreach Society. We were able at that point to purchase our first permanent location on Lorne St. We moved to our present location in November of 2002.
Our goal has been to provide secure healthy food to any resident of Kamloops who is in need while allowing them to maintain their dignity. We would never be able to accomplish this if not for our talented and dedicated group of volunteers. We have a small group of permanent staff but our main force is made up of people from many different back grounds and abilities. We have practicum students from the nursing and social work program at Thompson Rivers University, special needs people from different therapeutic groups, work experience groups from schools and first nations initiatives and good people with a spare couple of hours to give back to their community.
We have been able to accomplish all of this with out any permanent funding from the government. We are completely dependent on donations from the community, temporary grants from different branches of government and the generosity of local business and service groups.
We are a group for the community supported by the community and we are very proud to be able to work with and for the people that we do.
